Fantasy Fest Key West: What to Expect + Tips From 4 Years of Going
If you love Halloween, costumes, going out, and the general idea of an entire island collectively deciding to be completely unhinged for more than a week, you need to know about Fantasy Fest in Key West.
I have now gone to Fantasy Fest four different years, and at this point it has become one of my favorite Halloween traditions.
The easiest way I can describe it is:
Imagine Mardi Gras, Halloween, a giant costume party, and Key West nightlife all happening at the same time.
Except Fantasy Fest lasts 10 days.
And every year has a completely different theme.
For 2026, Fantasy Fest runs October 16 through October 25, and the theme is Musical Icons and Iconic Musicals. The dates and themes change every year, so always check the official schedule before planning your trip.
If you are looking for a Halloween destination that is way more than just dressing up and going to a bar for one night, this is it.
What Is Fantasy Fest?
Fantasy Fest is an annual festival in Key West that takes place over 10 days around Halloween.
And interestingly, it was basically created because October used to be too quiet. Back in the 1970s, October was considered part of Key West's slow season. Some businesses on Duval Street would actually close during that period because tourism dropped so much.
A group of local business owners decided they needed a way to bring people back to Key West before the winter season started, so in 1979, they organized a parade inspired by Halloween and Key West's love of costumes.
That relatively small first parade eventually turned into Fantasy Fest.
Today, the festival includes more than 60 parties, marches, balls, street events, costume contests, and the massive parade that takes over Duval Street on the final Saturday. Fantasy Fest can bring tens of thousands of visitors to the island each year.
So yes. Key West basically created a giant Halloween party to fix a slow tourism month. And it worked.
Every Fantasy Fest Has a Different Theme
One of the things that makes Fantasy Fest especially fun is that every year has its own theme. People really commit to it.
You will see everything from extremely elaborate handmade costumes to giant themed floats with dozens of people performing together.
The themes are actually submitted by members of the public, and the Fantasy Fest board chooses the winner.
You definitely do not have to follow the official theme with every costume you wear, but it can make planning your outfits a lot more fun. And yes, I said outfits plural.
If you stay for several days, you are probably going to need more than one costume.
Why Fantasy Fest Is Such a Good Halloween Trip
If you are trying to decide where to spend Halloween and you care more about going out and having fun than haunted houses and pumpkin patches, Key West is one of the best places I can think of.
The atmosphere is completely different from a normal Halloween weekend.
You do not just go out Saturday night in a costume. The entire city feels involved. People are dressed up during the day. Bars have different themed parties. There are events happening all week.
You will walk down Duval Street at 3 p.m. and see something that makes you question whether you are underdressed (or overdressed, as a lot of people wear minimal clothing during Fantasy Fest).
And then somehow it gets crazier at night.
I have also seen a lot of people from the University of Miami head down to Key West for Halloween and Fantasy Fest, so if you are coming from South Florida, you will probably run into plenty of other Miami people.
First Weekend vs. Second Weekend
One thing to understand before booking your trip is that Fantasy Fest basically has two weekends, and they are not the same.
The entire festival runs for 10 days, but the second weekend is the big one.
That is when you get the Friday Masquerade March and the massive Saturday night Fantasy Fest Parade. The official festival schedule keeps the Masquerade March on the final Friday and the main parade on the final Saturday every year.
If you can only go for one weekend?
I would personally choose the second weekend. That is when Key West feels the most packed and chaotic.
If you want more time to experience the smaller parties and events without the absolute peak crowds, staying longer or arriving earlier can also be fun.
Consider Going to the Zombie Bike Ride
One of the most recognizable Fantasy Fest events is the Zombie Bike Ride.
Thousands of people dress up like zombies and ride bikes through Key West together. And people take the zombie part seriously.
There is body paint, fake blood, costumes, bikes decorated to match, and thousands of people all riding together toward downtown.
In recent years, the event has drawn more than 7,500 cyclists, and it typically begins around Fort East Martello before heading toward Duval Street.
Even if you do not want to actually ride, watching thousands of zombies bike past you is still entertaining.
If you are participating, rent or reserve your bike in advance. Trying to suddenly find a bike while thousands of other people have the exact same idea is probably not the move.
Friday: The Masquerade March
The Friday of the second weekend has another one of my favorite Fantasy Fest traditions: the Captain Morgan Masquerade March, sometimes called the Locals' Parade.
This is basically a huge costumed walking party through Old Town. Everyone gathers in costume and walks through the streets together before eventually ending up around Duval Street and the Fantasy Fest Street Fair.
Along the route, some guesthouses and businesses traditionally offer drinks to marchers, and the entire thing feels much more like you are actually participating in Fantasy Fest instead of standing on the sidewalk watching it.
If you love costumes, I would absolutely do this. The creativity gets ridiculous.
Some people show up in something they probably put together that afternoon.
Other groups look like they started planning their costumes the previous November. And that is kind of the beauty of Fantasy Fest. You can be as casual or as excessive as you want.
Saturday: The Huge Fantasy Fest Parade
Then you have the main event.
The Fantasy Fest Parade takes place on the final Saturday night, and this is basically Fantasy Fest's version of Mardi Gras.
Huge floats move down Duval Street alongside walking groups, bikes, dancers, performers, and thousands of costumed participants while tens of thousands of people watch from the sidewalks.
I have actually been part of a float for two years, which gives you a completely different perspective on the parade.
You are not just standing there watching everyone go by. You are part of the chaos.
And the floats are not simply decorated vehicles rolling down the street. Many groups build an entire performance around the year's theme.
There are actual judges along the parade route, and entries can compete for awards including Best in Entertainment, Best Costume, Interpretation of Theme, and Best Overall. Parade entrants may perform a dance or skit multiple times along the route, including specifically in front of the judges.
The two years I participated, being part of the float was honestly just as fun as the actual party afterward. You spend all of this time practicing and getting ready, and then suddenly you are moving down Duval Street surrounded by a ridiculous number of people.
It really does feel like Mardi Gras. Just with significantly more body paint.
A Very Important Note About Nudity
Fantasy Fest definitely has a reputation for nudity. And when you are actually there, I completely understand why people assume nudity becomes legal during Fantasy Fest. But technically, it does not.
The official Fantasy Fest rules are very clear that public nudity remains illegal.
There is, however, a designated Fantasy Zone/Costume Promenade along Duval Street where certain body-painted looks are permitted under specific rules. Painted female breasts are allowed within that designated zone, but current rules require pasties underneath the body paint. Outside of the designated area, you are expected to cover up.
So yes, you are probably going to see a lot more skin than you would during your average Key West weekend.
Just do not interpret that as “anything goes.” Check the rules for the year you are attending before choosing your costume.
The Bars Are Half the Fun
Key West already has an amazing bar scene on a normal weekend.
During Fantasy Fest? It is on another level.
One of my favorite things about going out in Key West is that you do not necessarily need to pick one place and stay there all night.
You can basically bar hop your way down Duval Street.
Go somewhere for a drink. Hear music coming from another place. Walk over there. Stay for an hour. Leave. End up somewhere completely different. Repeat until your shoes hurt.
During Fantasy Fest, many of the bars have their own themes, costume parties, DJs, live music, contests, or special events, so you can almost treat Duval Street like one giant party where every few doors gives you a completely different atmosphere.
Personally, I think that is part of what makes Fantasy Fest so much fun. There is always somewhere else to go.
One thing to note, however, is that a lot of bars charge a cover during Fantasy Fest. It's also extremely crowded. I would make sure you get to the bars early.
How Many Days Should You Go to Fantasy Fest?
Fantasy Fest lasts 10 days, but I do not think most first-time visitors need to attend all 10.
Unless you have an impressive amount of stamina.
If this is your first Fantasy Fest, I would probably recommend 3 to 4 nights, making sure you are there for the second weekend.
A really good first trip could look like:
Thursday: Arrive + go out on Duval Street
Friday: Explore during the day + Masquerade March + bar hopping
Saturday: Relax during the day + Fantasy Fest Parade + biggest party night
Sunday: Recover + brunch + leave
If the Zombie Bike Ride is high on your list, you may want to arrive earlier in the festival depending on that year's schedule.
My Fantasy Fest Tips After Going Four Years
1. Book Your Hotel Early
Do not decide two weeks before Fantasy Fest that you suddenly want to stay within walking distance of Duval Street. The official festival itself recommends planning 7 to 10 months in advance because hotels and flights fill up quickly.
If you know you are going, book early.
2. Stay Somewhere Walkable
If you can afford it, I would prioritize staying around Old Town or within walking distance of Duval Street.
You do not want to spend your entire weekend trying to get cars back and forth through Fantasy Fest crowds.
Being able to walk home is worth a lot.
3. Plan More Than One Costume
If you are staying multiple nights, bring multiple outfits. And do not assume you need to follow the official theme every single night. You will see people wearing everything imaginable.
4. Comfortable Shoes Are More Important Than You Think
Yes, you want your costume to look cute.
You also may be walking and standing for hours. Choose accordingly. I have learned this lesson enough times.
5. Check the Schedule Before You Go
Fantasy Fest is not just one parade.
There are dozens of events happening throughout the festival, and some require tickets. The complete schedule is typically finalized closer to the festival, so look at it before your trip and decide which events you actually care about.
6. Make Reservations
For restaurants you really want to try, I would absolutely book ahead.
Key West is packed during Fantasy Fest.
Do not assume you are going to walk into a popular restaurant with six people at 7:30 p.m. and immediately get a table.
7. Hydrate
This sounds painfully obvious until you have been bar hopping on Duval Street for eight hours in a costume. Drink water. Florida is still warm in October.
8. Be Prepared to See Everything
Fantasy Fest is probably one of the most open, anything-goes-feeling events I have ever been to. I wouldn't recommend bringing anyone under the age of 18.
While public nudity is still illegal, you likely will still see it anyway.
You will see elaborate costumes, body paint, barely-there outfits, people who clearly interpreted the dress code very loosely, and pretty much everything in between. Key West is already a very open-minded place, and Fantasy Fest turns that energy up about ten levels.
There is even a clothing-optional rooftop bar called Garden of Eden that is open year-round, not just during Fantasy Fest. It sits above The Bull & Whistle on Duval Street, and yes, clothing really is optional there.
And the costumes are only part of it.
People are partying hard. There is a lot of drinking, the streets are packed, everyone is in an extremely social mood, and you are going to see some truly wild behavior.
Personally, I think that is part of what makes Fantasy Fest so entertaining. It is very much a come as you are, don't be easily shocked, and mind your own business kind of environment.
My biggest advice is just to know what you're walking into.
If you're easily offended by nudity, sexual humor, revealing costumes, heavy drinking, or people being extremely uninhibited in public, Fantasy Fest probably isn't going to be your favorite event.
But if you go in expecting it to be weird, wild, incredibly open, and unlike basically any other Halloween celebration you've been to, you'll be much more prepared for the experience.
9. Do Not Plan Anything Productive for Sunday Morning
Trust me.
Is Fantasy Fest Key West Worth It?
If you like Halloween, costumes, nightlife, live music, ridiculous people watching, and Key West? Absolutely.
I have gone four years now, and there is a reason I keep going back.
Every year feels different because the theme changes, the costumes change, the parties change, and the people you are with change.
But the overall energy stays the same. It is loud. It is weird. It is creative. It is a little outrageous.
And Key West is basically the perfect place for it. You already have an island known for bars, live music, eccentric locals, and people who generally do not seem overly concerned with behaving conventionally.
Then you add Halloween costumes and tens of thousands of visitors.
