One Day in Monaco: The Perfect Day Trip Itinerary

Monaco is tiny, but somehow there is still a lot to do.

You can see historic streets, giant yachts, luxury shopping, the famous casino, incredible coastal views, and some of the most expensive real estate in the world, all in one day.

One of the highlights of our trip was renting a vintage car for a short tour around Monaco, which ended up being way more fun than I expected.

If I were planning one day in Monaco again, this is how I would do it.

One Day in Monaco at a Glance

Morning: Monaco-Ville → Prince’s Palace → Old Town

Late Morning: Port Hercule → lunch

Afternoon: Retro car tour → Monte Carlo → Casino Square

Late Afternoon: Shopping, drinks, or Larvotto Beach

Evening: Dinner in Monte Carlo

Morning: Start in Monaco-Ville

I would start your day in Monaco-Ville, also known as Le Rocher or “The Rock.”

This is the historic side of Monaco, and it feels completely different from the supercars and designer stores of Monte Carlo.

You have narrow pedestrian streets, colorful buildings, little cafes, and some really beautiful viewpoints over the principality.

Visit the Prince’s Palace

Head toward the Prince’s Palace of Monaco. Even if you do not plan to tour the interior, I still think this area is worth visiting because of the views.

From around the palace, you can look out over Port Hercule, Fontvieille, and the surrounding coastline. It is one of those spots that really shows you just how compact and vertical Monaco is.

Wander Through the Old Town

After the palace, spend a little time wandering through the surrounding streets.

I would not rush this part. Grab a coffee, browse a few shops, and enjoy the contrast between the historic architecture and the extremely glamorous Monaco you are about to see later in the day.

Late Morning: Walk Around Port Hercule

From Monaco-Ville, head down toward Port Hercule. This is when Monaco starts to feel exactly like you probably imagined.

Huge yachts.

Luxury apartments climbing up the hills.

Sports cars.

People watching.

Even just walking around the harbor is entertaining.

If you are into Formula 1, you will also recognize parts of the famous Monaco Grand Prix circuit throughout this area.

Have Lunch Near the Harbor

I would stop for lunch somewhere around the harbor or on your way toward Monte Carlo. I would not make lunch a huge event unless there is a specific restaurant you really want to try because I would save plenty of time for the afternoon.

Afternoon: Take a Retro Car Tour

This was easily one of the highlights of our Monaco trip. We rented a very old classic car for a short tour around Monaco, and it made the whole experience feel even more glamorous and ridiculous in the best way. You get to see more of the principality than you would on foot, but it still feels like an experience rather than simply getting from one place to another.

And honestly, driving around Monaco in a vintage car just feels right. If you find a short retro car tour that works with your schedule, I would absolutely do it.

Be Prepared to Accidentally Become Part of the Attraction

One thing I was absolutely not expecting was how many people were standing around Casino Square taking photos and videos of the cars and people arriving. When we pulled up near the Casino de Monte-Carlo, there were a ton of people taking photos of us.

At least, that was our experience. So if you arrive in a noticeable vintage car, just know you may accidentally become part of someone else's Monaco photo album.

It honestly made the whole experience even more fun.

Spend the Afternoon Around Casino Square

After your retro car tour, spend some time around Monte Carlo and Casino Square. This is the Monaco you have probably seen all over social media.

The Casino de Monte-Carlo is one of the most famous landmarks in the principality, but even if you have no interest in gambling, I still think the area is worth visiting.

Walk around the square.

Look at the cars.

Browse the luxury stores.

Have a drink somewhere nearby.

And people watch.

The people watching alone is basically an activity.

Optional: Visit Larvotto Beach

If you have extra time and want a break from sightseeing, you could head toward Larvotto Beach.

I would only prioritize this if beach time is important to you. Otherwise, I think Monaco is more interesting when you spend your limited time doing the things that feel uniquely Monaco.

Evening: Dinner in Monte Carlo

If your schedule allows, stay for dinner.

Monte Carlo feels especially glamorous at night, and seeing Casino Square lit up after dark is worth it. This is where I would slow down, have a nice meal, get a drink, and enjoy the atmosphere instead of trying to squeeze in another attraction.

Two Things I Would Personally Skip

With only one day, I would not try to see everything.

1. The Oceanographic Museum, Unless You Are Really Interested in It

The Oceanographic Museum is one of Monaco’s biggest attractions, and I am not saying it is bad.

I just personally would not prioritize it on a first one-day visit. It can take up a large chunk of your day, and I would rather spend that time exploring Monaco itself.

If you love aquariums, marine science, or are traveling with kids, it may absolutely be worth it. Otherwise, I would spend that time around Monaco-Ville, the harbor, Monte Carlo, and the retro car tour.

2. Trying to See Every Garden and Museum

Monaco has a surprising number of museums, gardens, monuments, and smaller attractions for such a tiny place.

I would not turn your day into a checklist. You do not need to see every museum, every garden, and every viewpoint to feel like you experienced Monaco.

Personally, I would rather leave some room to wander, watch the cars around Casino Square, walk along the harbor, sit down for a drink, and actually enjoy being there.

Should You Stay Overnight in Monaco?

Personally, I think one full day in Monaco is enough for a first visit.

I did Monaco as a day trip from Nice, and I felt like we had enough time to see the main highlights, walk around Monte Carlo and the harbor, explore Monaco-Ville, and take our retro car tour.

That said, if you want to experience Monaco at a slower pace, have a nice dinner without watching the clock, or see Casino Square after dark, one night would be perfect.

Staying overnight also gives you more time to enjoy Monaco without trying to squeeze every stop into a single day.

If you decide to stay the night, these are my top 3 hotel picks:

1. Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo — Click here for rates & availability.

If you want the full Monaco experience, this is the splurge.

Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo sits directly on Casino Square next to the Casino de Monte-Carlo, so you really cannot get much more central or iconic than this.

This is the hotel I would choose for a honeymoon, anniversary, or trip where staying somewhere incredible is part of the experience.

Best for: Luxury, special occasions, couples, and the ultimate Monte Carlo stay.

2. Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo — Click here for rates & availability.

For something that still feels incredibly luxurious but a little more understated, I would look at Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo.

You are still extremely close to Casino Square, but the hotel has more of a romantic, elegant Belle Époque feel.

If I wanted a luxury hotel that felt slightly quieter than Hôtel de Paris while keeping an amazing location, this would probably be my pick.

Best for: Couples, romantic trips, and classic Monaco luxury.

3. Novotel Monte Carlo — Click here for rates & availability.

If you want to actually spend a night in Monaco without spending quite as much on your hotel, Novotel Monte Carlo is a much more realistic option.

It is close to the train station and within walking distance of Monte Carlo, Port Hercule, and Casino Square. It also has a pool, which is a nice bonus if you are visiting during the summer.

It is definitely more modern and simple than the other two hotels, but that is also reflected in the price.

Best for: More moderate budgets, families, and travelers who care more about location than having an ultra-luxury hotel.

Is One Day in Monaco Enough?

For a first visit, I think one full day is perfect.

You can see the historic side, walk around the harbor, experience Monte Carlo, take a retro car tour, shop, eat, and still have time to slow down a little.

If I could only tell you to prioritize three things, I would choose:

  • Monaco-Ville and the Prince’s Palace area

  • A retro car tour

  • Casino Square and Monte Carlo

That gives you the historic side, the glamorous side, and one of the most memorable experiences we had during our trip.

Would I Stay Overnight?

For a first trip, I would still personally do one full day.

But if you have room in your itinerary, one night would be the sweet spot. You would get to enjoy Monaco after many of the day trippers leave, have dinner without rushing, see Monte Carlo lit up at night, and wake up somewhere that honestly feels a little surreal.

I do not think you need two or three nights unless you are specifically coming for the luxury hotels, restaurants, nightlife, or a major event.

One day is enough. One night is a nice upgrade.
