Travel Advisor vs. AI: Why You Should Still Book With a Human
Between AI trip planners, review sites, and booking platforms that put every hotel and flight in the world at your fingertips, it's fair to ask why you'd hand any of that over to someone else. But after planning my own trips and now helping plan other people's, I can tell you the value was never really about access to information. It's about what happens with that information, and what happens when things don't go according to plan.
Here's what a good travel advisor actually gives you:
You get your time back
Planning a real trip well means hours of tabs open across booking sites, reviews, forums, and blog posts (yes, including mine), trying to figure out which recommendations are trustworthy. An advisor skips that entirely. Instead of a thousand options, you get a short list of ones that are actually worth your time, based on what you're looking for. That's hours, sometimes days, of research you get back.
You often get perks you can't book yourself
Through industry partnerships, advisors can frequently unlock things that aren't available on public booking sites such as room upgrades, resort credits, early check-in or late check-out, complimentary breakfast, or a welcome amenity waiting in your room. None of it is guaranteed every time, but it's the kind of thing that's basically impossible to access on your own.
Your trip gets built around you, not a template
Generic itineraries assume everyone wants the same trip. A real advisor asks what your pace is, what you actually care about seeing, what your budget looks like, and builds around that instead of handing you the same top-10 list everyone else has. It's the difference between an itinerary that technically covers a destination and one that actually fits how you travel.
You're getting real experience, not just information
This is the part that changed how I think about it. AI and search engines can hand you data — hours, prices, star ratings — but that's not the same as knowing a place. A good advisor has often been there, stayed there, or has a trusted network of people who have. When I write about destinations on my travel blog, I'm writing from having real-life experience. That's the kind of firsthand detail no algorithm can generate, and it's exactly what a travel advisor brings to your own trip.
It doesn't cost you more
This is the part people are most surprised by. As travel advisors, Ryan and I are typically compensated by the hotels, tour operators, and other travel partners we book through. This means you can often work with us without paying more than you would if you booked the same trip yourself.
You have someone in your corner when things go wrong
Flight cancellations, missed connections, a hotel that lost your reservation, a sudden weather event: when you book everything yourself, you're the one on hold with the airline at midnight. When you book through an advisor, you have someone who can call in, use their own contacts, and start solving the problem while you're still figuring out what happened.
You get to actually enjoy the planning
There is a version of trip planning that is fun, like dreaming about where to go and what to see, and a version that is all logistics, like comparing flights, double checking visa requirements, and sorting through cancellation policies. A travel advisor takes care of the logistical side so you can focus on the exciting part.
