Where to Stay in Chengdu: Best Areas, Hotels + Where We Stayed
Trying to figure out where to stay in Chengdu can feel a little overwhelming because there are several completely different parts of the city that could make sense depending on what you want to do.
After visiting, though, I can say I was so happy with where we stayed.
My family stayed at Grand Hyatt Chengdu on Chunxi Road, and I absolutely loved the location. We were surrounded by shopping, restaurants, and things to do, and we could easily walk to Chunxi Road, Chengdu IFS, the giant panda climbing the IFS building, and Taikoo Li. Grand Hyatt itself is literally located on historic Chunxi Road, which is one of the city’s main commercial areas.
For me, it was the perfect base for a first trip because we could spend the day sightseeing somewhere else and then come back to an area where there was still so much happening.
Would I stay there again? Absolutely.
And if someone asked me where to stay in Chengdu for their first visit, Chunxi Road would be my first recommendation.
That said, there are a few other areas that make sense depending on whether you care most about traditional atmosphere, nightlife, value, or being close to specific attractions.
So here is where I would stay in Chengdu and the hotel I would choose in each area.
Where to Stay in Chengdu: My Quick Answer
If you just want the short version:
Chunxi Road & Taikoo Li: My top pick for first time visitors and where my family stayed. Best for shopping, restaurants, nightlife, and being in the middle of everything.
Kuanzhai Alley: Best if you want more traditional atmosphere and easy access to tea houses, historic streets, and local food.
Wuhou & Jinli: Best for history, traditional streets, and a slightly quieter stay.
Tianfu Square: Best if you want to be very central without staying directly in the busiest shopping district.
Yulin: Best for foodies and travelers who want a more local neighborhood feel.
For a first trip, I would personally stay around Chunxi Road again without hesitation.
My Top 3 Hotels in Chengdu Overall
If you came to me and said, “Just give me three Chengdu hotels to start with,” these are the three I would look at first.
⭐ Grand Hyatt Chengdu — Click here for rates and availability.
This is obviously my most personal recommendation because it is where my family actually stayed.
The location was what made it so good for us. You are directly on Chunxi Road, surrounded by shopping and restaurants, and I loved being able to walk to IFS and Taikoo Li without needing to get in a car every time we wanted to go somewhere. Hyatt describes the hotel as being in the city center on Chunxi Road, and it sits close to Taikoo Li and the wider central shopping district.
For our first trip, I honestly could not have asked for a better location.
Also, don't get me started on the breakfast buffet. It was never ending and had absolutely everything you could think of.
Best for: First time visitors, families, couples, shoppers, and anyone who wants to be right in the middle of Chengdu.
⭐ Upper House Chengdu — Click here for rates and availability.
If I wanted a more boutique, design focused luxury stay, I would look at Upper House.
It is right in the Taikoo Li area, so you still get the same incredible central location but with a completely different hotel experience from Grand Hyatt.
This would be my pick for someone who wants the hotel itself to feel more special and intimate rather than staying in a larger traditional luxury hotel.
Best for: Couples, luxury travelers, design lovers, and travelers who want to stay around Taikoo Li.
⭐ The Ritz-Carlton, Chengdu — Click here for rates and availability.
If you want a more classic five star luxury hotel in a central location, I would look at The Ritz-Carlton, Chengdu.
This puts you closer to Tianfu Square while still keeping you within easy reach of Chunxi Road, shopping, and many of Chengdu’s central attractions.
I like having this in the top three because it gives you another central option without putting every recommendation directly on Chunxi Road.
Best for: Luxury travelers, couples, families, and travelers who want a more traditional five star experience.
Where We Actually Stayed in Chengdu
My family stayed at Grand Hyatt Chengdu, and I absolutely loved it. And honestly, a huge part of that came down to the location. Chengdu ended up being a much better shopping city than I expected, so being directly on Chunxi Road was perfect for us.
We could walk outside and immediately have shops, malls, restaurants, and people everywhere.
Chengdu IFS was only a short walk away, which meant we could easily go see the giant panda climbing the building, shop inside IFS, and continue into Taikoo Li without turning it into some huge sightseeing excursion. Hyatt guests also consistently note that IFS and Taikoo Li are within easy walking distance.
I loved that because some days you do not necessarily want to plan another attraction. Sometimes you just want to leave your hotel, walk around, shop, get food, and see where the night takes you.
Chunxi Road was perfect for that. And because the area is so central, it was still easy for us to get to other parts of Chengdu when we wanted to visit the panda base, People’s Park, Wuhou Shrine, or Kuanzhai Alley.
I would stay at Grand Hyatt Chengdu again in a heartbeat. Click here for rates and availability.
1. Chunxi Road & Taikoo Li: My Top Pick for First Time Visitors
If you are visiting Chengdu for the first time and want me to make the decision easy:
Stay around Chunxi Road.
This is the city’s main commercial district and one of the easiest areas for shopping, restaurants, transportation, and nightlife.
It is also where you will find some of the places you will probably want to visit anyway, including Chengdu IFS, the famous climbing panda, Taikoo Li, and Chunxi Road itself.
Current Chengdu lodging guides consistently recommend Chunxi Road as one of the best areas for first time visitors because of its central location and easy access to food, shopping, transit, and attractions.
Why I Like Chunxi Road
✅ Amazing shopping
✅ Tons of restaurants
✅ IFS and the giant panda nearby
✅ Taikoo Li within walking distance
✅ Great nightlife and city energy
✅ Easy metro access
✅ Fantastic for first time visitors
The Downsides
❌ It gets busy
❌ Hotels can be more expensive
❌ Traffic can be annoying during peak hours
❌ Probably not where I would stay if I wanted a super quiet trip
⭐ My Hotel Pick on Chunxi Road: Grand Hyatt Chengdu — Click here for rates and availability.
Easy. I would choose Grand Hyatt Chengdu again. Since this is where we actually stayed, it is the Chengdu hotel I feel most comfortable personally recommending.
I especially like it for someone visiting for the first time who wants to be able to walk outside and immediately have shopping, restaurants, and things to do around them.
Best for: First time visitors, shoppers, couples, families, and anyone who wants maximum convenience.
2. Kuanzhai Alley: Best for Traditional Chengdu Atmosphere
If you care more about traditional streets, tea culture, and a slower atmosphere, I would look around Kuanzhai Alley, also known as Wide and Narrow Alleys.
You are close to traditional architecture, tea houses, food, shops, and some of the more historic feeling parts of Chengdu. This area can feel a little more atmospheric than Chunxi Road, especially if massive shopping malls are not your priority.
It is still central enough that you are not isolating yourself from the rest of the city, and current Chengdu guides often recommend the area for travelers who want easier access to local food and culture while remaining fairly central.
⭐ My Hotel Pick Near Kuanzhai Alley: Diaoyutai Boutique Hotel Chengdu — Click here for rates and availability.
If I were staying in this area, I would choose Diaoyutai Boutique Hotel Chengdu.
It fits the neighborhood much better than staying at a huge modern tower hotel because the whole appeal here is experiencing a more atmospheric side of Chengdu.
I would look at this one for a romantic trip or for someone who wants their hotel to feel more connected to the traditional side of the city.
Best for: Couples, boutique hotel lovers, culture, and slower trips.
3. Wuhou & Jinli: Best for History and Traditional Streets
I would consider the Wuhou Shrine and Jinli area if history is a big part of why you are visiting Chengdu.
You have Wuhou Shrine and Jinli Ancient Street right there, which makes it easy to explore one of Chengdu’s most historical parts without traveling across the city. The area tends to feel a little quieter than Chunxi Road while still having plenty of restaurants and places to wander. It can also offer somewhat better hotel value than staying in the absolute center of the city.
⭐ My Hotel Pick Near Wuhou: Chengdu Wuhou Shrine Mercure Hotel — Click here for rates and availability.
For this area, I would choose something convenient to the shrine and Jinli rather than paying extra purely to stay in a luxury shopping district.
I think this area makes the most sense for travelers who care more about sightseeing and history than being surrounded by malls.
Best for: History lovers, families, value conscious travelers, and anyone prioritizing Wuhou Shrine and Jinli.
4. Tianfu Square: Best for Central Convenience
Another area worth considering is Tianfu Square. This puts you right in central Chengdu without putting you directly inside the busiest part of Chunxi Road.
You have metro access, shopping, museums, and easy transportation to other parts of the city. I would choose this if you want a more traditional city center hotel experience and do not necessarily care about being able to walk directly into IFS every night.
⭐ My Hotel Pick Near Tianfu Square: The Ritz-Carlton, Chengdu — Click here for rates and availability.
If I were staying around Tianfu Square, I would pick The Ritz-Carlton, Chengdu. It gives you a polished luxury hotel experience while keeping you very central.
This is the one I would recommend if someone wants five star service and a convenient base but does not necessarily want to stay directly on Chunxi Road.
Best for: Luxury travelers, couples, families, and travelers who want a central location.
5. Yulin: Best for Foodies and a More Local Feel
If you have already been to Chengdu or simply do not care about staying next to the biggest attractions, look into Yulin. This area is better if you want to wake up, walk outside, and feel like you are in an actual Chengdu neighborhood rather than a major tourism and shopping district. There are restaurants, cafes, markets, bars, and local food everywhere.
Travel guides specifically point to Yulin as a good option for travelers who want a more authentic neighborhood atmosphere and easy access to local breakfast and food.
Personally, I would probably choose this on a second trip rather than my first. For our first visit, I really liked having the convenience of Chunxi Road. But if I came back and wanted to experience a slightly different side of Chengdu, Yulin would definitely interest me.
⭐ My Hotel Pick Near Yulin: Skytel Hotel Chengdu — Click here for rates and availability.
For this part of the city, I would prioritize location and value over staying in a huge luxury hotel. This is more of a neighborhood choice than a “stay at the fanciest hotel possible” choice.
Best for: Foodies, repeat visitors, longer stays, and travelers who want a more local experience.
Chunxi Road vs. Kuanzhai Alley: Which Would I Choose?
For a first trip, Chunxi Road. Pretty easily.
I loved being able to walk to IFS, Taikoo Li, shopping, restaurants, and nightlife.
Kuanzhai Alley is prettier and more traditional, but you can easily visit it during the day without necessarily needing to stay there.
For me, Chunxi Road was just much more useful as a home base. If I came back for a slower or more romantic trip, though, I could see choosing somewhere around Kuanzhai Alley for a completely different experience.
What About Staying Near the Panda Base?
Personally, I would not. Unless the panda base is somehow the only reason you are visiting Chengdu, I would rather stay centrally and travel out there in the morning.
You are probably going to spend several hours at the panda base and then return to the city anyway. I would much rather come back to Chunxi Road, Taikoo Li, or another central neighborhood where I have restaurants, shopping, nightlife, and other attractions around me.
The panda base is something you visit. Chunxi Road is somewhere I actually want to come back to every night.
Which Chengdu Area Would I Choose?
If you are still deciding, here is how I would narrow it down:
First trip: Chunxi Road / Taikoo Li
Traditional atmosphere: Kuanzhai Alley
History: Wuhou / Jinli
Central luxury: Tianfu Square
Food and local atmosphere: Yulin
For me, Chunxi Road wins for a first trip. And after actually staying there, I understand why it gets recommended so often.
